WSPA Canada is the Canadian branch of an international network representing more than 600 humane societies and other animal protection organizations in more than 130 countries. Through direct field work, campaigning, legislative work, humane education and training programs, WSPA strives to raise the standards of animal welfare worldwide.

WSPA is represented on numerous international bodies and is the only international animal welfare organization to have consultative status with both the United Nations Social and Economic Council and the Council of Europe. One of 13 WSPA offices around the world, WSPA is registered as a Canadian charitable organization (#12971 9076 RR0001).

WSPA has been on the front lines of animal protection for more than 25 years. Through practical field projects, rescue and disaster relief operations, undercover investigations, legislative action, education and awareness programs, WSPA has been progressively improving conditions for animals around the world. WSPA History

Our origins go back more than 50 years; WSPA was created in 1981 through the merger of two organizations:

• The World Federation for the Protection of Animals (WFPA), founded in 1953
• The International Society for the Protection of Animals (ISPA), founded in 1959

These two organisations pioneered international campaigns on animal welfare issues ranging from the Canadian seal hunt, whaling and animal transport to the plight of animals in disasters.

In 2006, WSPA marks its 25th anniversary of becoming “WSPA”.
